Objetivo: Identificar o processo de dispensação de órteses, próteses e meios auxiliares de locomoção (doravante, OPM) pelo Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) no Departamento Regional de Saúde da 3ª Região (DRSIII) do Estado de São Paulo e, também, realizar um mapeamento dos serviços de reabilitação física existentes nessa região e posteriori correlação dos dados com as leis vigentes. Metodologia: Trata-se de um estudo transversal exploratório, de abordagem qualitativa, no qual os sujeitos participantes da pesquisa foram os principais profissionais atuantes no processo de dispensação de OPM ou responsáveis pelo fluxo de aquisição destas nas cidades. Enquanto instrumento de coleta de dados foi utilizado um questionário semiestruturado, elaborado pelas próprias pesquisadoras, que envolve questões direcionadas para a identificação dos centros de reabilitação física nos municípios, composição da equipe envolvida, fornecimento de tecnologia assistiva por meio do SUS, tempo para recebimento e existência de lista de espera. Resultados e discussão: Os dados obtidos foram mensurados estatisticamente, categorizados e descritos, sendo correlacionados com as legislações vigentes voltadas à garantia e acesso à tecnologia assistiva. Observou-se que a prática em torno desse recurso no referido DRS concentra-se em um único polo assistencial, causando longo tempo de espera e pouca efetividade dos serviços prestados, além de ainda manter um caráter assistencialista. Conclusão: O presente trabalho trouxe indícios de que, embora o direito de acesso à tecnologia assistiva seja garantido legalmente, ainda existem muitas dificuldades e desafios em torno dessa prática.
